WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

We are a group of caring, knitters, crocheters and quilters, who want to provide lovingly handmade items to children that are being cared for at the Children’s Medical Center in Dayton, OH.

We provide, soft, machine washable, blankets, (or afghan squares), hats and socks (sized for babies and children). We ask that new yarn be used, and that yarn be free of pet hair and smoke odor. If your items get soiled while being made, please wash them before sending them. Use a baby detergent such as Dreft. No fabric softener please.

Yarns: Please use soft yarns. If you rub the yarn on the inside of your arm and it feels scratchy, it will probably feel that way to a little one. Use a variety of colors. Since we are not just knitting for babies, use your best judgment. If you do decide to knit for a preemie, pastel pinks and blues are a good option.

Babies and children come in all sizes, so all sizes are accepted. If you want to knit sweaters they said they could make use of these as well, as some children that come in, have on very little. When making baby sized blankets, keep in mind, that little fingers and toes can get caught in holes, which could cause problem for baby, so the more tightly stitched ones are better for the wee hands. Handmade toys will be a blessing as also.

When packaging your items, please use a seperate ziploc bag for each item. Include your name and address in each bag.

Items can be dropped off at the Dayton Children’s Medical Center, located at, 601 Valley St, Dayton, OH 45404, or mailed to;

Dayton Children’s Medical Center, Attn: Child Life, 1 Children’s Plaza, Dayton, OH 45405.

Mark your donation as on behalf of ”Dayton Children’s Helping Hands”, and include the following with your donation;

First and Last Name

List of Items Donated

(Dayton Children’s requested contact information that they may properly thank the giver)

Again, they stated over and over how greatly they appreciated our thinking of them.

We want to state that this effort is to help the patients, and bring some brightness and sunshine to these families that may be facing difficult circumstances. These children may not necessarily be poor or “needy” in the sense that they don’t have anything, but, we know from experience how gifts of this kind can really make a difference to these family during their time at the medical center.
